Description
Rare and exotic 1970's Transrotor Double Deck Turntable made in England by J.A. Michell. Yes, the same J.A. Michell that made the Hydraulic Reference, Prisma, GyroDec, Orbe and others. Two types of Double Decks were made, this is the more desirable enclosed case type made for four 9" arms. Please click on the J.A. Michell Gallery link below to see two views of this exact same table. http://www.michell-engineering.co.uk/turntable_picture_gallery.html Yes, those are mostly my pictures, I am now selling this rare turntable without the tonearms shown in this picture. As you can see from the photos below it is in excellent condition. This deck has been completely restored to original condition including a complete overhaul of the motor assembly by J. A. Michell. The platter surfaces were reshimmed with new using original aluminum shim. The bearings were checked and trued by my machinist. The entire unit was disassembled, cleaned and all Acrylic surfaces polished. It was then reassembled and has been playing in my living room since. It works flawlessly and sounds superb. There are but just a few small scratches in the Acrylic base that can be removed with more polishing if desired. I only hand polished the Acrylic to remove the yellowing caused by glass cleaner over the years. I am offering this turntable exactly as shown below with seven armboards, two sweep brushes, matching level and two record clamps. There is a small piece missing from the black plastic top of one of the sweep arm stands and two noticeable scratches in the gold plated part of the level. The pictures below are of the actual turntable system I am selling No tonearms are included in this auction, they are only shown as examples. Years ago I was told by both John Michell and Jochen Rake of Transrotor that approximately 15 of each type were made. Twelve of each type were sold to Transrotor of Germany to be sold in Europe and three of each type were sold by Michell in England. During my second visit with John Michell he informed me that the Double Deck was mainly made as an arm or cartridge comparator but also can quite obviously be used as a standard turntable with the convenience of 4 tonearms. It allows you to try four different arms using the same cartridge or you could use two of the same arms and try two different cartridges on the same piece of vinyl or better yet, two identical, ”cold” records. This all being done on identical bearings, platters and motor on the same base. Most all these Decks went to hi-fi stores, studios and radio stations. The remainder went to home hi-fi enthusiasts who after seeing and hearing them at an audio show couldn’t live without one. They were quite expensive at the time due to the high price of thick Acrylic, twice as many parts necessary and the high costs of the Papst motor assembly. After years of asking every connection I have in both the UK and in Europe I amazingly came up with 2 Double Decks, one open version and one of the encased ones. I am offering here on auction the Transrotor badged encased version. The Double Deck employs a single, pancake type d.c. brushless motor encapsulated within a detachable sealed drive and control module in the base. It turns both platters at the same time. Two-speed action (45 and 33 1/3 r.p.m.) is achieved electronically with On/Off and speed change set by a single knob. As the knob is turned, cam and magnetic switching obtains the required setting. Fine control for each speed is achieved independently via two micro-potentiometers located one on each side of the main control knob. A neon-lit stroboscope is provided for accurate setting. This deck still has the original little tag that shows you how all this is done. The entire deck is leveled by un-screwing the support pods shown. O-rings on the bottoms of these pods keep the base firmly in place. Armboards are easily made from Acrylic, most any commercial plastics dealer can cut them to size and drill the holes needed for most any tonearm. This turntable is being offered internationally since the motor works on both 115 volt 60 Hz, and 240 volt 50 Hz. All that’s required is that the fuse be moved to the appropriate holder on the motor. There is also another potentiometer that is accessible from the top of the motor that can be adjusted if the voltage used runs slightly higher or lower than the norm.
