It uses the Inmarsat satellite network  which provides 100% coverage across Australia. These phones are portable but also great as a backup house phone with antenna sitting outside. It has three phone numbers one for the phone, one for the fax line and one for data. The fax line is at back of unit and you can plug in a standard fax machine or a standard 2 wire phone. It has a built in modem with a serial interface also at the back of unit which is good for getting email etc.  I am supplying with 6mth repair / replacement warranty excluding the battery and carry bag. The phone gets full 5 bars signal strength and holds this continuously with no drop outs. The battery is 3 years old but works well.The unit comes with 12v car and  240v mains power  packs. Includes carrybag, compass, phone extension lead, manual and antenna extension cable. (its complete).Originally these units were over $4000 new.
