They introduced the first component to bare the Nakamichi name; a cassette player so advanced it immediately catapulted them to the top of the audiophile component market. No other company has been more committed to perfecting the sonic reproduction of the cassette tape format and no other company has achieved the success of Nakamichi in the design and production of tape decks. In-fact, probably the only subject that elite audiophiles and stereo review magazines unanimously agree on is that Nakamichi makes the finest cassette decks and there is no close 2nd. After one audition of the classic tri-tracer 700 it is easy to see why.The 700 II tri-tracer is an absolute technological marvel. It was built in a day when quality meant more than profit margins and companies took pride in their accomplishments. At first inspection, one of the telling signs of the 700 II is its hefty weight and robust construction. The unit was efficiently overbuilt to exacting standards with the finest and most durable materials. Its transport and motor assembly were manufactured to the highest degree ensuring extremely stable and accurate tape reproduction and recording. Though the 700II was built over 30 years ago it greatly outperforms most cassette decks on the market today, and has unquestionably outlasted them. In the late 70’s it had a selling price of $1,140.00, although due to its proven durability and amazing performance it has more than justified that amount. Its sonic reproduction is of the utmost quality; clean, accurate, and utterly natural, it really makes you forget you are listening to a tape. Some of its many features include: TRI-TRACER " "Tri-Tracer" is the name created by Nakamichi Research Inc. for a series of professional quality 3-head cassette decks . "Tri-Tracer" is a 3-head system which rivals the fundamental performance of the best reel-to-reel tape decks with the highest possible standards. 3-Head Configuration Completely separate record, playback and erase heads configuration permits instantaneous off-the-tape monitoring and ensures the best possible frequency response, up to 20 kHz constantly. The record head is of hi-Mu ferrite with a 5 micron gap designed to obtain deep and intensive recording. The playback head is of special hi-Mu hard permalloy cores and thin titanium film spacer which enables the gap to be as narrow as 0.7 micron. Alignment Beacon A unique device in which a pair of LED'S (Light Emitting Diodes) flicker alternately when a correct head azimuth is obtained. It eliminates the poor high-end response and phase shift created by the change in tape running condition due to dimensional differences among various brand cassette tape enclosures. Tape Drive Mechanism Closed loop double capstan, staggered large flywheels maintain perfect tape tension across the 3 heads with ultra-low wow and flutter. Also a magnetic feedback pulse-controlled DC servomotor maintains correct speed at all times despite possible voltage and frequency fluctuations. IC Logic Electronic Control All tape motion controls are solenoid operated, with light finger touch buttons. IC control logic circuit produces any sequence control of complicated timing which assures the user complete freedom from click noise. Other automatic controls such as automatic shut-off, memory rewind, and record lock are also provided. The position in motion will be indicated by illuminated lamps above each control button. Instant Acting Jam-Proof Device Unique optical sensor activates within .3 seconds preventing possibility of cassette "spill." This device makes possible the use of C-120 cassettes as well. Complete Plug-In Electronics Electronic circuitry eliminates all connecting wires with a complete plug-in system consisting of six printed circuit boards mounted onto a single main circuit board. Each unit amplifier employs top quality transistors and assures the best possible performance and reliability.. .the mic. Amplifier with 60 dB dynamic range is but one example. Db Peak Level Meter The Nakamichi 700 is equipped with level meters indicating the peak level in recording so that they effectively eliminate the risk of over-recording. 3-Pont Sound Pickup In addition to the usual two microphone inputs a third input for the blend microphone is provided and each input level can be adjusted independently so that professional quality mixing is possible. The blend microphone is especially useful for recording or solo vocal or solo instrument. Pitch Control Any speed within the range of +/-6% can be selected. This control is for correction of tape speed previously recorded off speed, and for playback at higher and lower pitch in music lessons and other wide applications. Peak Limiter The record amplifier in the Nakamichi 700 has very wide dynamic range so that distortion may hardly occur in normal sound recording. I powered it up to test. It Fast Forwards and Rewinds without problem, although it will not stay in play mode. Once I touch the play button it momentarily lights up then immediately returns to stop mode. I am not sure if this is an adjustment issue or something else. I tested the output with the test tone feature and this works great. Cosmetically tape deck is very clean with only a few minor scratches/dings on the wood cabinet and a couple tiny nicks on the face. This is the rare multi-voltage unit that will work in any country.
