Description
PURE-SONICS tube amplifiers Only the best was good enough for Dizzy Gillespie Up for auction is a rare tube amplifier combo previously owned by Dizzy Gillespie, the legendary Jazz musician. He had a taste for the very best when it came to audio gear. An insider tip had him turn to an ingenious enterprise in Chicago: Pure-Sonics, Inc. He was pleased with what he got: a stereo control center and a power amplifier featuring latest tube technology and - most of all - fidelity of reproduction second to none. Gillespie was so convinced of the quality of the amps that he decided to promote them in various ads (HF & Stereo Review). And here's what you get: a Quadramatic Stereo Control Center Model 112 from the Cantabile Series and a Quadramatic Stereo Power Amplifier Model 402-C. The power amp delivers 40 watts per channel (RMS) from 25-20,000 cycles at "immeasurable" distortion (quote from the manual). Hum and noise is 80 decibels below rated output. Tube complement: 4xEL34, 2x6CG7, 4x12AX7 and 2xGZ34. The preamp offers a frequency response from 5 cps to 60,000 cps +/- 1 db at "immeasurable" distortion (measured at 2 volts equivalent sine wave). Noise is 18 db below "residual record or tape noise". Tube complement: 1x6X4, 1x6EA8, 4x6C10 (GE compactrons!), 2x4BQ7A. Both units are set to 117 volts. The circuitry used in these amps was called "quadramatic" and said to be the most advanced of its day. Unfortunately, I'm not a technician and won't be able to provide detailed information on the technical concept of the amps (schematics are available). To my knowledge, the power amp is is an improved Marantz Model 9 design with ultra-linear connected outputs, balanced negatively biased grids and cascading 12AX7s for extra gain. Obviously a cost-no-object design. I do know for certain, however, that this tube combo sounds fantastic, comparing favourably to contemporary McIntosh and Marantz gear! Besides, the manufacturer was so sure of the quality achieved that they granted an unlimited warranty to the original purchaser - unheard of in 1964. Operating manuals along with a service and maintenance guide make this package complete. Also included are letters testifying to the famous first owner. As can be seen from the pictures, both units are in very good condition. There are some scratches, dings and other cosmetical imperfections; nothing to worry about. These Pure-Sonics amplifiers have been gone through by a tech and found to be in excellent working order. To achieve maximum performance, the output tubes were replaced by NOS Siemens EL34 (original boxes available) and the rectifiers by NOS Valvo GZ34. Moreover, the filter capacitors of the power amp were supplanted. Other than that, the units seem to be untouched. To sum up, this is an ultra rare tube amplifier combo well worth collecting. It's in very good condition and will give you plenty of listening pleasure for years to come. What are you waiting for? Don't miss this rare opportunity - it may never come again! Please note: These amplifiers are located in 8049 Zurich, Switzerland (not Germany as indicated)! Thus shipping fees have to be determined individually depending on destination and service requested (ground or air shipping, regular or express). The shipping calculator is not correct! Notice: The items are sold "as is" - no warranty of any kind is applicable here. All sales are final. No haggling over price after auction is finished.
