Description
Introduction: Sony DAS-R1 and its partner CD drive player were The Most glorified Sony Statement products made. Retailed at $8000 USD in 1987-1989, that was a lot of money in 1980’s dollar term. The DAS-R1 DAC used two Philips TA1541A S1 silver crown DAC chips in one Copper chassis. There are two fancy power transformers to supply 10 plus power supplies for each digital and analog circuits. This DAC’s build/finish quality and sound quality is second to none in Japan, even by today's digital circuit standard. Some R1 owners claimed in Asian discussion boards that sony R1 was better than Studer A727, others claimed at par with Studer A730. About this auctioned Sony DAS-R1 DAC unit: This Sony DAS R1 DAC unit was from a client in California. This client reported the unit was in his recording studio, during one evening, AC power surge took one channel down. So only one channel works. Damaged channel only has distorted sound. He took this damaged unit of 40 lb net weight to his friends for tech assistance that caused a few bright marks on the right side wood(see photo 3, the line was from light reflections), however, hobbyist friends were never seen this Sony DAC before, let alone to really offer any repair ideas(no repairs so far). So this unit was offered to us for auction to the broader internet community. It was reported that there were only about 10 sets of these Sony R1 sold in the U.S. Those who have access to good repairman should not miss this beauty. Cosmetics wise, it is in excellent condition with a few small imperfections on the top plate and bright marks on the right wood, see the 12 x8 inches large sized photos below. Shipping weight is at about 45 lb. Well packed, what you see is what you would get. Sold As Is. US domestic shipping is by FedEx Ground, We ship international by TNT.
