Sony has been known all over the world for producing high quality electronics, and with decks like this, one can easily see why. The TC-280D is a deck only without amplifiers or speakers. This is a three head deck with 1-7/8ips, 3-3/4ips and 7-1/2ips-tape speeds. The reel size can be 7” or smaller. Sony designed this deck with important record features and with ease of operation. Tape loading is very easy and strait forward. The reels are held in place with pull and twist spindles eliminating the need for rubber reel holders. There are RCA line inputs and outputs for easy connection to your stereo system, and microphone inputs for live recordings. This deck comes with a Sony take-up reel and a high-resolution copy of the owner’s manual. The manual explains how to record in Mono or Stereo and how to do Sound-On-Sound recordings. If you could go back in time this is exactly as this deck would appear If seen on a showroom display back in the mid 70's! I am an experienced service technician and this deck has been serviced completely. When you buy a reel-to-reel deck that is listed as in good working condition but has not been fully restored it will require servicing to get back in mint operating condition as this deck is. No reel-to-reel deck can go over 30 years without servicing. I don’t just replace the worn out belts and lubricate, I do a complete restore of the entire deck. This involves a great deal of disassembly, cleaning, lubricating, and testing. There is a lot more involved in the replacement of the belts than simply taking off the old belt and putting on a new one. If the old belt residue is not completely cleaned from the pulleys the new belts will not last as long. All of the rubber parts used in this deck have been replaced with factory new old stock parts. This includes both idler rollers, the pinch roller, The drive belt, and the counter belt. One of my photos shows all of the new parts before they were installed. The grease used back when these decks were manufactured unlike the grease we have today had a tendency to dry up causing moving parts to stop moving freely. This is the number one cause of tape deck failures. To service one of these decks correctly, the old grease must be cleaned out and new grease used to re-lubricate. The new grease I use is clear synthetic grease that will last a lifetime. All periodic oiling has also been performed as well. The oil I use is heavy synthetic electric motor and gear oil that will protect much better than the oil that was originally used. This decks used the new Ferret heads that have an extras long life compared to standard permalloy heads and these show no wear, and have been thoroughly cleaned and demagnetized and checked for proper alignment. See photo. Pinch roller pressure has also been checked as well as brake adjustment. All switches and controls have been cleaned and are working smoothly with no noise. I will pack with extreme care to insure it will arrive completely undamaged! Every function has been thoroughly tested and is working perfectly. The sound quality rivals a CD!
