It is the famous Tandberg 3001A tuner with exceptional reception and superb analog circuitry, along with the convenience of 8 programmable station presets. Most audiophiles are familiar with the illustrious reputation of Tandberg audio electronics and arguably the very best has been the last series before their exit from the business, of which this tuner belongs. It simply sounds stunning, especially if your local radio stations had recently upgraded to broadcast HD Radio. Although HD radio is intended to enable digital transmission, the source chain upstream, such as the CD player, have in most instances also been upgraded, and the sound now from great FM tuners are enjoying a quiet but significant renaissance. This tuner was completely restored to factory specifications by Mr. Heinz Preiss, the acknowledged Tandberg expert, in the fall of 2004 at the cost of $353. All necessary as well as marginal parts had been changed to assure a long service life. It has since performed flawlessly and is probably good for many more years. There are some pinhead-sized nicks here and there on the extruded aluminum surface of the tuner, and they cannot be simply refurbished. I have tried over the years but any rogue attempt would only more damage than good. No black felt markers to further ruin an otherwise OK case. So I lived with them. Please see pictures.
