But there was a problem, when I was overseas I missed the FCC free renewal opportunity – and the FCC cancelled my Extra Class license I worked so hard to obtain in 1992. So it'll be a while before I retest.   About the rig:\\\ So here’s a great little radio, WORKS FLAWLESSLY, used once or twice. I paid about $679 for it after taxes/shipping from HRO. This is the newest "ND" model - not the older without options. I played with it for a few hours, and here’s my take on the little rig: It’s size alone makes it worth every penny. This model has the NImH (not NiCad) rechargeable battery, which I’ve already inserted inside the radio. It appears to last a good while, still on full charge from the initial charge. People tell me it’ll last all day on HF. I like the whip on a BNC/VHF, works remarkably well. I had my old 160 antenna on the back, and it pulled in a QSO on 1.975. For portability or taking it to the beach it can’t be beat, the whole concept of the 817 model (and this particular unit) works surprisingly well.   If I were going to stay in the hobby I’d keep it. So here it is, you know the history.
